following their ongoing relationship with soma records, ukrainian duo woo york are set to release their new record that proves to be somewhat representative of recent dramatic events in their country. entitled i am against, both the main track and the ep itself are referring to the developments that lead to revolutionary struggle of the ukrainian people. fighting inequality, saying what you have to say and doing what you have to do seem to be the core ideas of the record. you might have figured that out yourself by spotting a rebel protester from january’s clash with riot police depicted on the record sleeve. the ep also features a special remix from uk techno producer, Ø phase. music-wise the ep presents the same idea: the epic energy of the title track highlights the drive that was fuelling peaceful individuals to go out onto the streets and fight for their rights. an excellent remix from Ø phase follows a similar path, although in its own original way that has made the uk-based artist’s name associated with the finest techno to date. closing the ep ‘in the end’ is a more abstract side of woo york’s music works that reminds us once again: every single act of violence is bound to come to an end at some point.

there is a common thread that runs through all of brandt brauer fricks music. it is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. the berlin trios 2010 album, *you make me real*, fused techno and classical. the 2011 follow-up, *mr machine*, saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. then, earlier this year, came *miami*, a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. the berlin trios instalment of the dj-kicks series does the same thing with a mix.

the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

without a doubt, manfredi romano (aka dj tennis) is a busy man. co-founder and partner of life and death, a dj with a full schedule and someone who still always has his fingers (and mind) in multiple projects and multiple places at the same time. how he juggles it (or when he sleeps) are questions best not pondered. one thing those who know him well have surely noticed is that he does it all while constantly on the move. unfazed by the constant whirl of cities that pass him by, he somehow manages to remain focused throughout. no matter where he goes, he somehow always manages to remain local.

monaco a go-go is singer/songwriter jobst miksche from hamburg/germany and persimmon lane ep is his debut release (for couldnt care more). with dance around yourself and machines it offers two slow intimate folk songs full of beauty and melancholia but also a certain easiness. on the b-side aera (who runs the aleph label) translates .dance around yourself. into an exotica infused cumbia acid mix that makes you feel quite the same than dj kozes adventures on. amygdala. do: dizzy, weird and sublime.

rising label releases its second ep with an original track by victor martinez, another artist from the agency, that gives life to this record and gets completed by remixes from oscar mulero, ness and adriana lopez. the original track by victor, -anything called dead consumerism”, is all about visceral and obscure techno with broken rhythms and high levels of hypnotism. following, we can find oscar mulero’s remix, a version that suggests another groove but maintains the essence of the original making it a serious and effective weapon. on the b side we can find ness’ remix, a track that captures you since the beginning. deep, elastic and elegant at the same time where hypnotism reigns and this few characteristics of the italian producer. adriana lopez closes the ep with a more percussive and energetic version. fine techno that catches you from the first beat, a perfect track as a dj.
